I am presently an assistant professor of digital audience engagement at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Arizona State University. I have over 15 years of experience in designing, implementing and evaluating behavior change communication campaigns, social influence and persuasion.

My qualifications include a PhD in Media and Information (2018) and a Master’s degree in Health & Risk  Communication from Michigan State University (MSU) on a Fulbright scholarship (2013), Post-Graduate Certification in Public Health from the University of Manchester, U.K. (2006) and Master’s degree in Information Systems Management (2005). During doctoral studies I worked as research assistant on projects funded by USAID, National Science Foundation, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In 2018, I received the outstanding doctoral student award by the School of Journalism at MSU.

I have authored 2 book chapters, 16 peer-reviewed journal articles and 38 conference papers. Five of my research papers received top paper awards at several national and international academic conferences. My research is published in high impact factor and peer reviewed international journals.

During my doctoral program, I received several grants including a $10,000 funding for a study on telepresence robots for healthy aging, another funding to explore nostalgic emotional appeals for smoking prevention ($4000), easing depression through nostalgia ($1800), and summer fellowship ($2500) to develop a timeline of communication history dating back to 3500 BC. Most recently, in February 2020, I collaborated with the College of Liberal Arts & Science and College of Law at ASU to submit a $1 million grant to the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights & Labor in USA on implementing a social media campaign to improve religious harmony for minorities in Pakistan. I am currently working as Research Fellow for the ‘Recovering Truth’ project at ASU in collaboration with The Walter Cronkite School and the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict.

Before coming to USA, I have worked on managerial positions in International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Save the Children International on Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health projects. During my role as a Behavior Change Communication Manager with IRC, I managed the creative design, implementation and evaluation of a $1 million health communication campaign in northern Pakistan. Later in 2010, I received an outstanding performance award from Save the Children International for emergency flood response program in Southern Pakistan.

My research includes both quantitative and qualitative methods comprising of experimental studies, focus groups, interviews, psychophysiological studies as well as visual communication and linguistic semantic analysis. My scholarship is published scholarship in a book chapter as well as Communication Research Reports, and Journal of Medical & Internet Research, among other journals.
